American University's Certificate Programs in Translation are designed to expose students to a variety of translation activities. Translators are employed by governments, multinational corporations, importers and exporters, commercial and nonprofit research institutions, publishers, the news media, municipal governments in bilingual cities, businesses, and other local and international organizations.

Undergraduate majors and minors in French

As translation is interdisciplinary, the program combines courses in Foreign Languages, English, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Library and Information Science and the MAFLL Program.

South Carolina state-funded institutions are required to provide equal language access to all persons receiving their services. Health care facilities are faced with too few qualified interpreters to meet their needs. This program will prepare proficient bilingual speakers in the essential areas of language, culture, and ethics so that they will be able to provide professional services in all health care settings.

The Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL) is a research and training unit within the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State. Affiliated with the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, the Institute and its faculty coordinate the four-year Bachelor of Science Program in Translation, the 2-year Master of Arts in Translation and the Ph.D. in Translation Studies.

The Modern Language Translation program is designed for professionals who plan to pursue a career in translation and train for the American Translators Association (ATA) certification. The certificate is also intended for individuals who wish to communicate effectively in a multilingual and multicultural work environment. The sequence of courses provides translation training from Arabic, French, or Spanish into English.

The Masters of Arts in Bilingual Interpreting for English-Spanish continues to be the only graduate program in the United States that offers students the opportunity to receive the education and training of a professional degree-holding interpreter. The program is a comprehensive, sequenced, and integrated series of courses designed to provide the student with the theoretical foundation, performance competencies, and research skills required of a graduate entering this growing profession.

The goal with the Technical Spanish – Translation/Interpretation program is to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and necessary tools to connect the Spanish-speaking community and the health care, business, legal and law enforcement fields.

Binghamton University's Translation Research and Instruction Program offers the first PhD in Translation Studies in the U.S. It prepares students both for the professoriate and for scholarly research-including research-informed translation and offers individualized interdisciplinary tracks to accommodate a variety of backgrounds.

The intertwining of assertions and presuppositions in utterances affects the way a text is perceived in the source language (SL) and the target language (TL). Presuppositions can be thought of as shared assumptions that form the background of the asserted meaning. To translate presuppositions as assertions, or vice versa, can distort the thematic meaning of the SL text and produce a text with a different information structure.

Self-assessment is a process that enables students to assess their own performance and greatly facilitates their acquisition of increased responsibility for their learning and performance. The advent of e-learning in the Spanish university system has provided opportunities to reorient translator training and accept new challenges that enhance the quality of undergraduate studies. The present study demonstrates that the benefits of this new mode of instruction are especially appropriate to translator training.

The Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages offers courses and degree programs in Western and non-Western national literatures, languages, and civilizations. It also has programs in Comparative Literature (including World Literature), in Comparative Ancient Civilizations, and in Linguistics. Its programs encourage a wide variety of both disciplinary and interdisciplinary interests.

The Master of Arts in Translation Studies is a separate track of the M.A. in Comparative Literature. Thirty-three credits are required. The degree can be completed in one year, including the summer, with two semesters of four courses each (12 credits each) and a summer spent writing the thesis (9 credits). Two languages are required (one may be English). Students will explore practical techniques and strategies of translation in addition to theoretical and cultural studies implications of their field.

The Department of Modern Languages plays a key role at UNK by preparing students for an increasingly global, multicultural society in which knowledge of other languages and cultures is an important asset. Offering courses essential for a strong liberal arts education, Modern Languages is developing new ways to enhance the teaching and learning environment for students who will become successful teachers of foreign languages, translators and interpreters, and leaders in international business and education.
